Leicester's history in the 5th century is obscure. In 679 or 680, Leicester was chosen as the center of the bishopric. From 914 to 941, Leicester was briefly occupied by the Vikings.
middle Ages
Due to a power struggle between the church and the British nobility, Leicester lost its city status in the 11th century and did not regain it until 1919. In 1927, the Church of St. Martin was upgraded to Leicester Cathedral. The tomb of King Richard III of England is located in Leicester Cathedral, but he is not buried there.
In 1226, Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester forced King Henry III of England to convene an English Parliament at Leicester Castle (now in ruins) . This was the first time that the English Parliament had ever been held in Leicester.
English Civil War
Leicester was a parliamentary stronghold during the English Civil War. In 1645, Prince Rupert of the Rhine (one of the royalists) planned to attack Leicester, forcing the New Model Army (the parliamentary army) to return to the defense and stop attacking the royalist headquarters-Oxford. On May 30, Prince Rupert officially attacked, and hundreds of Leicesterians were killed (although British parliamentary documents state that the number of casualties was exaggerated).
8th-19th century
Since the Grand Canal was built in 1790 to connect Leicester to London and Birmingham, Leicester, like other British cities, has become an industrial city. It is mainly developed in the shoemaking industry and mechanical engineering, and even the famous Luddite movement. Happened from here. These manufacturing industries are now in decline.
local history
Due to a power struggle between the church and the British nobility, Leicester lost its city status in the 11th century and did not regain it until 1919. In the 19th century, Leicester continued to expand its jurisdiction, mainly by annexing: Belgrave, Aylestone, Knighton, and North Evington.
The Local Government Act 1888 came into effect on 1 April 1889, and Leicester became a county borough (County Borough, independent of the Borough of Leicestershire County Council). In 1935, Leicester annexed Evington, Humberstone, and Beaumont Leys, and the boundaries have not changed since. After the Local Act 1972 came into effect on 1 April 1974, Leicester ceased to be a county municipality and became a non-metropolitan district of Leicestershire. The Local Government Commission for England, established in 1992, recommended that Leicester become a unitary management area and no longer a metropolitan area, which has been effective since April 1, 1997.
Leicestershire is therefore both a non-metropolitan and an honorary county, while Leicester is a unitary authority area. If Leicestershire is treated as a non-urban county, Leicester is not part of it; if Leicestershire is treated as an honorary county, Leicester is still part of it administratively.
